as you know free software is definition of richard stallman but open source is definition of eric raymond in 1998.

both of them are correct but first one is mostly about social and legal aspects of software development and the last one talks about technical issues; and i prefer to talk about open source definition so i used close source development via open source development model and i mean benefits of open source in technical issues.

companies like IBM maintain their proprietary softwares (or close source ones?!) and open source projects simultaneously. they think, this way, their open source and proprietary worlds get benefit from each other symmetrically

yes, you’r right . companies like IBM or SUN Maintain their close source softwares, but as far as it has benefits to them; after a while they start to release codes to benefit from community .

let me give you an example : here linus torvalds talks about reasons why sun made solaris open source;
and linus says :

they’ll talk about it. They not only drool after our drivers, they
drool after all the _people_ who write drivers. They’d love to get
kernel developers from Linux, they see that we have a huge amount of
really talented people. So they want to talk things up, and the more
“open source” they can position themselves, the better.

on the other hand today java is open source, and that’s good ,i’m happy with that ; but did you know that sun is implementing the Java Virtual Machine that runs inside the kernel of the Solaris ( link )? so we can guess that linus is mostly true; open source java + open source solaris + community == > more driver .

and that’s so good , really good , i’m happy which java and solaris are open source ; but we should be aware that why these companies (even google, ibm … ) do that .

i’m a bit curious to know how a commercial industry could or should help open source? by abandoning their current proprietary (close source) softwares??

as i said, this is more benefit of companies to open source their softwares (and good for community too).

i think one of the best ways to help community is to help on monetary problems of community

finally there r lot’s of other ways which commercial industry can help to and benefit from open source community.
